One of the things about driving is defensive driving. It's somewhat hard to do involuntarily, especially when you're in a rush, and a lot of people don't do it. For example, if you're in the second left lane, you'll turn into the area between the number 2 and 3 lane. It's essentially making a cushion and making room for error. It's the difference between an accident and getting to work on time.
